Applicants are given points for educational qualifications, earnings, previous work in the UK and age. They must also show English language skills. Successful applicants collect enough points and show that they have good enough English to qualify for an HSMP visa.

An HSMP visa allows a person to work for themselves and to apply for any job in the UK. It is more flexible than a work permit, which is issued for a specific job and only where no UK or European national can do the job.
