The work permit scheme allows UK based employers to obtain work permits for people from outside the European Union. It is the employer and not the employee, who applies for the work permit. A work permit is given for a specific job in a specific company. If the employer wants the employee to do a different job then certain conditions must be met. 
If an employee wishes to change jobs, the new employer will need to apply for a new work permit. As well as business and commercial work permits there are special types of work permits for people to get training and work experience, and for sportspeople and entertainers. There are also work permits for companies wishing to transfer staff to the UK (Intra-company transfers).
